The Mapulana speak Sepulana, a dialect of Northern Sotho. Sepulana is not written or taught in schools. It is considered a unique dialect of Sepedi, with its own distinct words.

The Mapulana were displaced from their tribal lands in the 1800s and early 1900s by white settlers. The Mapulana commemorated the 1864 battle of Moholoholo at the foot of the Drakensberg mountain peak.
